Mesoamerican Notes
Latin America – countries from Mexico south that speak romance languages (derived from Latin) –
esp Spanish & Portuguese. Includes Central & South America
Central America – the 7 nations on the isthmus connecting N. & S. America
Mesoamerica – a cultural area including Mexico & Central America
OLMEC (1500-300 B.C.)
- “Mother culture” of Mesoamerica - Influenced others cultures that came later (Maya & Aztec)
- 1st to have feathered serpent god – later used by Maya & Aztec
- Other Olmec Firsts: ballgame, writing, calendar
- Known for their colossal carved stone heads
- Possible connection to African peoples?
CLASSIC MAYA (250-900 A.D.)
- Located in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, & Belize
- Farmers – maize, beans, sweet potatoes
- Built pyramids
- Tikal – largest (40,000 pop) & most important city (present day Guatemala)
Social Structure:
King – gods give right to rule
Priests – calendar, writing, astronomy (used knowledge to support king)
Nobles – owned land & organized military
Warriors – protected cities & fought other cities for slaves
Artists – religious & political sculpture
Peasants – fed the cities
Slaves – built monuments & cities – used in sacrifices
- Religion was very important, believed in many Gods
- Theocracy – Government ruled by religious leaders
- Astronomers – developed 365 day calendar
- Used hieroglyphics – picture writing
- Collapse theories: overpopulation, overfarming, & malnutrition lead to inc. warfare & unrest
AZTEC (1300-1600 A.D.)
- Located in Mexico
- Aztec = Mexica tribe, one of several Nahua speaking tribes
- Tenochtitlan – Capital & largest city (200,000+ people) (present day Mexico City)
originally built on island in Lake Texcoco
- Warlike – conquered states were forced to provide tribute
- Kings used tribute to reward soldiers & make new alliances
- Religion very important
- Offered human sacrifices to War & Sun Gods
- Huge trading empire
- Created floating gardens
- Conquered by Cortes & Spanish “conquistadors” starting in 1521
